Printmaking than be physically punishing work. Back strain , pinched nerves , arthritis , tendonitis , bruising and sheer exhaustion is one of the reasons we are happy to be Canadian and have nationalized health care .

After making some 500 prints in the past 8 years x-rays , cortisone injections , anti-inflammatory and orthopedic braces are routine. But our main ally is ibuprofen . Cheap , portable and bad for the kidneys. It's as essential to our practice as our inks , screens and anti-fatigue mats.

We'll be showing several hundred prints and hopefully selling close to as many. Prints will be for sale opening night from 15$-60$.

Thanks to our friend and peer , Greg Pizzoli , for putting so much time and care into this show. Greg is an artist , printmaker , educator , author and awesome guy . This is the second retrospective he's put on for us.

Yoko Ono's Blanket

Everyone is insisting I had swine flu , but there was no coughing. All I know is I missed our Saturday opening at BALTIC and Hamborghinni didn't perform. I also missed the class , which Yannick had to teach on his lonesome.

Feverish and dizzy , passed out back stage in a cold sweat , Laura Harrington , the exhibition co-ordinator at BALTIC and our minder/babysitter during our stay, mentioned I could sleep in a quieter room , using Yoko Ono's blanket.

So I did. The blanket was light blue , crocheted , probably cotton but maybe a cotton poly blend.

I'm unsure whether it was a) a blanket Yoko Ono brought to BALTIC and left behind , b) a blanket someone at BALTIC bought for Yoko Ono's nap needs or c) some random blanket in the bowels of the BALTIC used by both Yoko Ono and me , Chloe Lum.

Either way I slept hard , for 3 days straight.

The rest of our UK trip was fun and productive. Saw gigs and movies , hung with old friends , met new ones . Went to a pile of galleries and museums. Ate great food . talked about art a TON and got well intimate with the buses/tubes/overground in London.

One of the many highlights was getting together with our new pals at
Heretic in Stoke Newington. We Met Luke kinda randomly about a year and a half ago when he emailed us , saying he was in Montreal , liked our work and wanted to meet us and and see our studio. We became fast friends and kept in touch. Her repaid our hospitality in spades and we got together with him ,
Therese and Jon and banged out a jam print, quick and dirty.
This is for sure our favorite activity while on the road.

The defining aspect of what excites me in art and design is a solution
and visual attack that I could never conceivably come up with on my
own. The reality is few folks meet that standard. Seripop not only
meet that standard but they blow it completely away. I could never
even begin to analyze how they create the magic that emanates from
their minds. It's just there, before me, in all its magnificent glory.
If you are reading this then it is also within your reach to
experience this glory in person. Give in to the power. Just give in.

Here are a few words to accompany your journey:

JF: How has your work evolved from being a single piece, wheat pasted
to a light pole, to filling galleries?

SP: We started getting the idea from the first posters we were pasting
up in the streets. It just revealed itself as a medium with a lot of
possibilities, but the openness seemed too big to handle at first, and
that's why we spent time crafting our posters and exploring the medium
in its inner qualities until we felt our language was mature enough,
as well as our comprehension of the environment in which the posters
are in was mature enough.

We wanted to comment on posters in the city and the city around them
and everything related to them, but putting up more posters about this
did not seem enough. We had to make the medium talk about itself in a
better way by isolating, and having it become a caricature of itself
in a way.

Our viewing of the changing urban landscape, as well as our
participation in some of those changes, left us with the desire to
comment on those changes by creating full-scale environments that, as
cities and their infrastructures, are inevitably temporary.

JF: How are you hoping this new work will connect with the viewer?

SP: The research is pretty selfish, self-sufficient. The viewer can
decode whatever he wants, and there is enough ambiguity left in the
final product to make this happen. There is a desire of immersing the
viewer while the installations are enveloping the whole space that
they occupy.

JF: More and more I see a playful use of exploiting the dimensionality
in your work – what is pushing this?

SP: I think it just results as a desire to break and explore with the
elements of space, layout and communication. We love doing experiments
with what works and we also love finding out what doesn't - it's all
allowed, as long as it's voluntary. We are interested in exploring our
fixations on cities, urbanism, the ephemeral and how they intersect
with the idea of a public space.

JF: There is also a great deal of skewed repetition, in that shapes
and images repeat again and again but never quite in exactly the same
form. Is that a byproduct of your assembly process or a conscious
decision or both?

SP: It relates to the printing process in a way, what we learned from
it and also all the frustrations that go with it. Want it or not, with
thousands of repetitions, a stencil will slowly degrade or clog up,
need replacement. The printing process stresses the fact that it
creates multiples and images identical to the previous, but, on a
macroscopic level, we all know this is not true. This has marked us
quite a bit, and we cannot escape it as it is a part of the medium.
And we are seeing reference to that in the environment within which
posters exist: Imperfect repetition of streets, of buildings, of
people, of the way posters are placed. There is also a reference in
there with the sacro saint work ethic: repetition of movement will end
up making perfection - we allowed ourselves to question this. What if
repetition creates imperfection? What if perfection is just the result
of erosion, so the polished piece is the degraded version of the
better, fuller rough original?

JF: What are the materials in your constructions and do you see
yourselves incorporating further experimentation in this arena moving
forward?

SP: Currently we are using only screen-printed paper put together and
treated in many different ways. We want to explore the medium fully...
it feels like the possibilities are endless. But we are open to ideas
and incorporating other mediums within our work. It all depends of
what we want to talk about. But we will definitely go beyond the
current form of installation, and push other ideas with screen-printed
paper solutions.

JF: How large would you like to build one of your towers of multiple
pieces?

SP: It depends of the subject matter, and the space that is given to
us to perform in. The towers right now are made of individual diamond-
shaped modules that are roughly 9"x9"x20", placed in rings of 7, and
stacked almost infinitely on top of each other. We can play with them
in any way, and future installations will show this - the towers are
just a form that we are exploring at this moment. The individual
pieces will evolve too, in fact we are seeking to push the physical
qualities of paper as much as is possible with how we can fold these,
put them together and have them react together.

JF: Does the viewer know (and do you want it to be evident) that the
pieces are constructed from multiple smaller pieces?

SP: We don't really care to make the process obvious or not to the
viewer. I would depend on their point of view, in some ways the
construction of the towers could be more obvious than others. We seek
to present an ensemble of work for the installation, and if things are
obviously made some way, well that's part of the aesthetic of our
piece and we want to integrate this into our language - we always had
an affinity with old school formalists and minimalists.

JF: How have you adjusted from making work where multiples and low
costs are the key and you can always hold back one for yourself to
making large one-time installations with the goal being to physically
separate yourselves from the work once it has been created?
(Personally, I always found fine art so difficult because I had to let
the final work leave my hands.)

SP: There was not really any adjustment for us, partly because the
"multiples" work, our posters, well, the ones that really count are
the ones that are in the streets. We fully embraced the ephemeral
nature of it. In fact that was the main attraction, and it's the
aesthetic base of the installation work.

JF: How does your living arrangement inform your work?

SP: We live in a working-class, non-artistic neighborhood. We are
quite anonymous there, and it allows us somehow to "create in secret."
Everyday, we travel to our studio, which is perched on the 12th and
last floor of an industrial building, a bit removed from the rest of
the city (and what a view!) To get there, we have to navigate through
the whole city, observe its changes, see what's going on and comment.
This daily displacement and our physical situation make us anonymous
observers, and we feel privileged by this position - this inspired us
in our work.

JF: In the same vein, how does your musical work inform your visual
work?

SP: Music is more of a parallel aesthetic research with our visual art
stuff. Although music, with its relations and discussions with the
outside world, tends to be much more abstract and arbitrary, to us we
broadly manipulate the medium the same way we do with screen-printing.
We fill the space - we talk about contradictions, opposites - things
clash - dissonance is king. Because that's what thrills us, it's our
environment. We are stressed out all the time.

JF: Your pieces seem to have an aggressive sharpness, even if they are
ultimately soft to the touch that has been evident in the graphic
edges found throughout your two-dimensional work. Did these shapes
just happen organically or take form consciously to create a bit of a
barrier between the physical engagement?

SP: Well, the first intent with the individual pieces that form the
tri-dimensional part of the installation was a practical one: making
the forms take as much volume as possible once assembled, and have
them fit together easily. Since these are printed flat, there are
multiples limitations that pushed us to choose the form we are working
with now. So, it did happen organically, and the result carries some
meaning. It opposes the shapes that are pasted on the walls that are
more often in the organic realm. But the final choice of the form was
a conscious one as well, even if its evolution was not. Because once
assembled, the shape creates repulsion and opposition. It does impose
itself, and the sharp edges recall the aggressive tension there could
be in creation and in being the viewer.

JF: What has the reaction been from the more established art community
to your work? How has the design community reacted to your plunge into
the gallery world – and more importantly, your adjustment in what you
present for that to take place?

SP: We live a life that is often hermetic, and the worlds we do come
into contact with are those overlapping worlds of DIY art and DIY
music. As far as the more mainstream art community or design
community, we are so off in our own little world that we are not
really aware of what they think of us - if they even think of us at all.

While it's true we are starting to show the installations in pretty
respected galleries and contemporary art centers and they seem to get
a pretty positive response from the viewer, we are also new enough to
working this way, that there hasn't been much critical feedback yet.

JF: Will you be getting special haircuts for the opening?

SP: Yes: Yannick a beehive and Chloe a comb-over.

Installation work at the Baltic

From July 24 until July 31, we were at level 1 in the Baltic Center for Contemporary Arts, mounting simultaneously two installation pieces: No Henge, from 2009 and The Trail, from 2008. The pieces were shipped on a skid that weighted 117 kg-- 310 forms were built and I don't even know how many posters we pasted on the walls and floor. This has been the largest amount of work we ever presented at a show; and we also showed the tallest structures to date: 16'3". Here's some pics.

Henging Our Bets

Opening night for No Henge went off without a hitch , the crew came out and we led them around the room sipping energy drinks and exchanging high fives.

Opening night , especially hometown opening night , is like a wedding or graduation or something for us. It's that big event that we want all the people we like to be there to witness. So thanks to everyone who came out and made the night more interesting.

Seripop's No Henge exhibition will open at the Emporium Gallery (3035 St. Antoine Ouest #74) on Thursday, July 2nd from 7PM-11PM. The exhibition will also be open on Saturday, July 4th and Sunday, July 5th from 12PM-5PM. Private viewings will be available thereafter by appointment from Monday, July 6th to Wednesday, July 8th.

About No Henge
Seripop is a Montreal-based, award winning creative duo that is internationally recognized for its stylistically distinct street posters and sculptural print installations. No Henge, their first solo exhibition in Montreal (and first Canadian exhibition in almost 2 years), elaborates on Seripop's penchant for psychedelic exuberance through an immersive, silkscreen-based kaleidoscopic take over of the Emporium Gallery. No surface will be left bare so be prepared for the onslaught.

Artist Statement
In 2005 Seripop started experimenting with sculptural print installations. The installations are aesthetically informed by poster making and comprise of large totem-like folded origami structures that look both like buildings and meat grinders. These sculptures and environments around them are made with screenprinted stock that is folded or pasted in overlapping layers on the gallery walls and floors, much like the layers of posters that accumulate on city walls.

Ultimately, the installations are abstracted visual comments on the relations between urban landscape and design, graphic design, the evolution of form within fine arts and the urban person. This is made by the use of imaginary 'logotypes' and forms evocating the urban environment, art and design history and clichés. Screenprinting on paper is a medium that is
historically associated with these subjects; its flexibility allows the dimensions necessary for the installations to put the viewer in context.

About Seripop
Formed in 2002, Seripop is the nom de guerre of Chloe Lum and Yannick Desranleau, the award-winning creative duo behind Seripop. Based in Montreal, Seripop has earned international attention for its stylistically distinct, silkscreened street posters which have been featured in notable books such as 'New Vintage Type', 'New Masters of Poster Design' and 'Print Liberation: The Screen Printing Primer' among many others. In 2005, Seripop began experimenting with sculptural print installations which led to Seripop having solo exhibitions at Peacock Visual Arts in Aberdeen, Scotland, Bongout Gallery in Berlin, Germany and Spedition in Bremen, Germany. BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art presents a three day event with Canadian art duo, Seripop from Friday 31 July to Sunday 2 August 2009. Seripop artists Chloe Lum and Yannick Desranleau have joined forces with guest curator Sophie Brown to bring a weekend of design, print, illustrations and live music to BALTIC.

Seripop’s installation of two and three dimensional psychedelic screen prints and
illustrations will be housed in BALTIC’s Level 1 Performance Space, creating a unique
environment for performances from 10 live music bands over two nights, including Lum
and Desranleau’s very own band Hamborghinni. The live music will come from the
likes of Cleckhuddersfax, drawing influences from the weirdest corners of punk, prog,
synth pop and disco to create a unique sound which mixes up experiment and fun in equal measures; Beards from Leeds who dress in homemade costumes and face paint making a theatrical performance; Birmingham based Phil Duckworth and Ben Sadler aka juneau brothers, who sing and play handmade electronic sculptural instruments inspired by folk history and Newcastle based modern folk trio Les Cox (sportifs).

Seripop are driven by a DIY underground music scene and create posters and artwork for their own band AIDS Wolf and other musicians. From this they have spearheaded an exciting independent art scene, which is more familiar outside of traditional gallery spaces.
Seripop are concerned with experimenting with surrealist imagery on their own terms
instead of creating commercial artwork. In despite of this their prints and designs have become very collectable and these young artists are forming a vibrant and successful international scene.

In addition to the live music programme Seripop’s installation will be free to view during gallery hours on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 August and will be accompanied by a free film programme which will be shown in the adjacent cinema.

A free fanzine for the event has been created by ‘zine makers Ricochet! Ricochet! and
Craft Club and will be available alongside other Seripop merchandise and silkscreened
posters from a fanzine distro stall located on Level 1 for the entire weekend. It will also offer works from North East fanzine makers with an opportunity to buy prints from the best of current UK screenprinters.

BALTIC Shop will also be selling Seripop prints and associated merchandise, with
products also available to buy online here .

Northern Print Biennale to offer even more Seripop events. Northern Print Biennale is a major international event for contemporary printmaking taking place across Newcastle upon Tyne; as part of the Biennale, Seripop will be resident at Northern Print creating a new screen print, which will be available to buy from BALTIC Shop. SERIPOP
Seripop are Yannick Desranleau and Chloe Lum. They live in Montreal, Canada and
work from the cooperative studio One Hundred Sided Die. Originally working in video
and performance, they started making handmade posters for their own band AIDS Wolf
in 2001 and soon were making posters for the majority of bands in the DIY, Punk, Noise,
Art Rock scene such as Lightning Bolt, USA is a Monster, TV on the Radio, XBXRX,
and Black Dice. Recently they have been creating large installations with their prints and
folded paper sculptures to transform a space where they wish to immerse the viewer in
their colourfully, distorted and saturated world.

Sophie Brown is a freelance curator and promoter based in London. Ensconced in the
DIY music scene, she has previously presented exhibitions at Three Colts Gallery,
Whitechapel Project Space and Oslo’s Henie-Onstad Kunstsenter concerned with the
meeting point between music, performance and art.

Yesterday , looking to have a lovely Sunday, we tried to check out the open studios organized by Design Montreal to check out how the others work. Alas , at 1pm we got to the old Montreal studio that was to be the first of our crawl and it was utter austerity. The doors were closed , no signage was up and nobody was around . We peeked in the windows and saw a deserted looking office so instead slunk off the the die to have an extended jam , just the 2 of us.

Our duo , Hamborghinni! are playing our first Montreal show in what? 2 years? ( I think in 08 our only shows were in Bremen , Germany and in Quebec City) Next Friday deets here::

We recently got our copies of 2 new books our work is in , and they are both lovely.

Gig Posters Volume I: Rock Show Art of the 21st Century is a really novel one , as each page is perforated so that you have reproductions of TONES of gorgeous out-of-print posters to hang wherever your hear desires. It's also impressively big AND if you order from the link I posted you get a FREE Jay Ryan silkscreened art print.

Check out his awesome and educational process thread that is full of pics to make you drool.

The other book is TYPOMOFO type morphing into forms
It's a nice hardcover book with an international mix of designers , many of whom I was unfamilliar with. It's always great to be turned on to new stuff. From us they put the cover we did for MSTRKRFT's "The Looks", probably the most well-received thing we've ever done.

Weirdly , our photocollage gatefold spread for the latest MSTRKRFT was deemed too much for photobucket , I guess all those arms and legs ARE pretty sexy.

Summer is starting in Montreal and while I'm sporadically working on my balcony garden , I'm not minding the indoors life. I feel like Yannick and I are on a roll with the book of collages we're working on for Soundscreen Design (It'll be out in September). I haven't had this much fun "working " in a while.

Speaking of work , we're taking on art jobs in earnest , as we are gonna be slowing down on the traveling over the next 10 months. We just wanna stay home and MAKE STUFF. We're both a lil' tired from all the touring we've been doing the past few years and have a huge backlog of ideas to put on paper. So if you need something special made , it's good timing .

Now that we are home and packing orders once more we're flogging the ever popular Mystery Packs again. Great for regifting , the [packs contain 22 random screened posters , made by us with love. It's 110$ postpaid in North America , 130$ postpaid anywhere else.

We did this cover for the new MSTRKRFT record back in the fall but wanted to wait till the record was out to show it. It was our first time doing collage with photos we art directed ourselves. The Photography is by our good friend Yannick Grandmont.

Design That Is More : Sonnenzimmer

I'm not sure if I've ranted about this before , but in my opinion , the strongest graphic design is the work that doesn't look like design . It's work that invents it's own language rather than those already established.

It communicates without looking commercial. And it looks effortless , organic while being so smart that it hits on both a visceral and intellectual level. It often has a subtlety to it , even if the imagery might be risky.

I have several colleges who do this type of work and over the years I've befriended many of them , in hopes that some of their overwhelming talent would rub off on me AND in order to pick their brains , see them work and snag a few prints for my walls.

For years I've been obsessing on Sonnenzimmer from Chicago , a studio made up of Nadine Nakanishi and Nick Butcher , who do some of the most exciting and original work I've ever seen.

Ok ok,

We've been working on a top-secret project with Soundscreen Design , where Soundscreen got three designers to pick bands they wanted to work with to create an exclusive, deluxxxe line of fancy assed merch , which would be sold as a collection. No need to wait in line at the merch table , you can buy these on the internet. We are totally stoked to be part of the Soundscreen Design Summer . The other designers include our buddy Jay Ryan
( aka The Bird Machine) &
Brian Roettinger (Hand Held Heart). We made weird designs for some badassed bands:
Handsome Furs , Fucked Up, and Deerhoof.

The shirts are totally classy, made from 100% organic cotton and the totes are made from bamboo . They were custom sized and custom died to our specifications. They fit well and feel sexy. The collection is limited, as it will only be available during the season of its release, in this case, Summer '09. So let's show off those arms , we know you've been hitting the gym all winter and spring.

Long time no update , I know. We were on tour for 6 weeks with our band , AIDS Wolf and got home 2 weeks ago , with the flu!

Now that we're back home , we're hard at work on a book of collages and some new art prints that I'll be posting sneak pics of this week.

Right now though , I'd like to reach out and ask for everyone's support and votes for our very first Threadless submission. We got invited to do a *Select* a few years ago but this is our first design up for votes. Late Monday night , we arrived home after 24 hours of being awake to a surprisly mild Montreal .

Our trip to Aberdeen was awesome , the show had a great turn out , we got lots of press and best of all had a 12 course vegan Japanese feast with Emma and Joe, I could barely walk after! The place is called Yatai and both the service and the food were excellent. We just told the waiter we were vegan and that we wanted a lil' of everything and both our servers and the chef were so acomodating. The bill was surprisingly low considering the the quality & quantity of the food.

Despite a huge case of nerves on behalf of both of us , I think the screenprinting class went quite well and am hoping at least a few of the people in the class are gonna be inspired to continue with printmaking.

The Peacock had us do a new art print , that they will take with them to the Glasgow Art Fair , they also extended an invitation for us to come back and produce a lithograph! That and our recent grant approval are the 2 best things to happen in my life in a while.

Now we're settled back into civilian life , doing a corporate job to make a bit of money and then working on personal stuff for our BALTIC show in May from here till we leave for tour in two weeks.

Every time I cross the ocean I wanna move. I don't mind the damp gloom of winter in Scotland , unlike in Montreal where just going outside into the cold HURTS , here you can walk about and not freeze your limbs off.

Tea flows like water and Marmite isn't a rare and spendy commodity to be hunted down and savored slowly , but the very staple of human sustinance . Yes friends , the best things in life ARE brown.

We're working on a new art print here at Peacock and the facilities are great but the studios chhhhhhilly , I wish we had the time to do more. Maybe dip our toes into the etching pool or do some lithography.

During our short residency, our first encounter was with 'Table Salt'. What? Well, apparently it's used in gravadlax.

Last night we had a blast having a late nighter finishing a commissioned print for the Peacock Contemporary Art gallery.

Aberdeen is having a thin layer of snow right now and my feet are constantly cold because of the everlasting wetness of the air. I guess wearing wool socks is useless right now.

I can't Believe we're been doing the Seripop thing for almost 7 years now. Our flat files are running out of space! To combat that I'm hoping to sell a pile of Mystery Packs to get rid of ever last pre-2005 print we have in stock. First resolution!

We've kinda been too productive for our own good.

Other resolutions for 2009:
-Do more art prints , books and installations.
-Apply for all the grants and residencies we can.
-Enter print and poster competitions, don't just think about it.
-Get a flat file for the house and organize print collection. (It's taking over our office.)
-Be more pro-active about contacting galleries.
-Get *something* lined up for London in May.

Eva Braun, this great Dutch noise-rock band. We played with them our first time in Amsterdam , back in '06 and they really impressed me. They are young and scrappy and the drummer told me she learned to play by bangin' on phone books.

Thanks for the awesome support Montreal! Despite a blizzard , our open studio was a screaming success! For those of you who couldn't make , we have our backpatches for sale at Local 23 ( 23 Bernard) and will be restocking them with prints before the weekend. They are a great shop , brimming with local art and fashion and nice (and nicely priced) vintage stuff so do check 'em out.

Right before we left for tour we were working on a few different album covers , this is the one we did for The Inevitable Backlash . It comes out March 3rd.

All that text is hand drawn and took a million years to get right.
Using the same 2 drawings , with different treatments on almost every panel of the layout , we're continuing the explore the idea of repetition as a hypnotic element , as seen on our recent posters for Little Claw , Silver Apples and Eats Tapes .

Hope everyone is having lovely holidays , right now our kitchen is filled with fresh baked sourdough bread and about 35 candycane cupcakes and more seitan that you can shake a stick at for various dinner parties with our awesome friends. We're trying to get some design work outta the way so we can hit the ski trails guilt free this weekend. Cracking open the new art supplies for got under the tree has me all excited , something is just so satisfying about the smell of new pencils.

Long time no update. We got back from tour a few weeks ago (yes , it WAS pretty fun . I'm in love with America , rock music , the desert , + people with brilliant ideas , overflowing with creativity and the elbow grease to see it through. People are amazing and I feel very lucky to constantly be interacting with some of the most interesting folks alive.) and have been busy lil' bees.
A few thing we've been doing are larger projects that will be unveiled soon , but for now this.

-GO see the Christian Marclay show in Montreal. Did I ever mention we met at one of his performances. One of the most witty contemporary artists around. As my friend Lisa said , he makes you wish you thought of it first.

-After 5 years of faithful service , we retired our 16 year old Econoline van and bought a bigger , newer one. Our new baby is only 6 years old with nary a rust spot. We're excited & proud parents.

-In February we'll be having our first ever show in Scotland at Peacock Visual Arts Peacock Visual Arts in Aberdeen. Yay! Lock up your Sheese !

-We're working on a very cool project with some very cool bands. Stay tuned for details.

A few weeks ago I asked if anyone had any questions for us. Well , here they are .

Adrian Asks:

What's the key to keeping your art and living situations alive being self-funded and all? I want in on the secret. I mean, I know sacrifices and MAJOR decisions need to be made, and setting your priorities straight, obviously. I take my art very seriously, but I still have to work a terrible job to pay my rent and chemicals/paper/photo supplies with barely anything to live on, and I have a serious record/book habit. What's your deal? Does the Seripop conglomerate of awesomeness stay alive on their having fun with printing all day long, every day? Does it have anything to do with where you live? I've always thought that every place is the same, no matter where you live. But i'm starting to doubt that. Maybe I need to move to Montreal? Studio space is non-existant where I live. I have to print photos in my small bathroom tub living with two roomates who always seem to have to take a shit.

Hi Adrian!
Our secrets are simple : we live cheaply and simply + work constantly. We avoid buying things we don't don't need (other than treating ourselves with books or records from time to time) , and though our income from most jobs we take on is pretty modest , we try to ALWAYS have several jobs on the go to keep us afloat. Apart from that we keep a steady hustle from selling our prints online and in stores AND are lucky enough to have a few bookstores/distros and record stores/distros that trade goods for prints or art services so our addictions aren't too expensive.

The first 3 years of Seripop we lived VERY lean and pretty much didn't buy anything other than food and art supplies. We were determined to create as much work as humanly possible and to get it seen by as many folks as possible . This got us a bit of notoriety and got our machine rolling , so to speak.

Montreal IS a relatively cheap city to live in , though it is gentrifying fast. For us , founding a co-op space to share with many other artists (there are 23 of us!) allowed us to have a large , centrally located studio we wouldn't have been able to afford otherwise. We found a warehouse and with our friends did all the construction/renovation work ourselves.

Now we have been in this space for 4 years and share a total of 3300 sq ft with our studio-mates. I'm sure in most cities there are artist co-ops you can join , universities you can work or volunteer at (and get lab time ) , or affordable real estate you can covert to a shared work space. Find places to sell your photos , don't be scared to do some commercial work in order to buy supplies for your personal work and do whatever it takes to get your photos seen and your skills in demand.

Show in galleries , make zines of your pics , submit to papers , magazines , blogs and zines. Do some pro-bono work for local charities .

Brendan asks:

First show/concert?

Chloe :Is it bad that i don't even remember what bands played? It was summer '91 and after my first show ,I was hooked and going to 'em, 2-3 times a week. Pretty sure it was a local band bill at Porter Hall (in Ottawa)
Yannick: A local show with Subb and Les Marmottes Aplaties in '94 (St. Jean, QC).

Preferred pens or other materials for drawing?

Chloe : Rapidographs
Yannick: Any kind oF pen really.

Brian asks:

How can an artist(s) tour like a band? How would you break even?

Hi Brian.
The first thing is to keep costs low, if you are traveling in a car or van , travel with another artist and do joint shows. If traveling by bus , rn'r. Avoid eating out as restaurants are giant money suckers! Instead hit up grocery stores to buy ready made stuff or stuff you can make with minimal prep. We tend to eat lots of homemade sandwiches on the road and we always have various nuts , fruit , carrot sticks and trail mix to snack on.It's way cheaper than hitting up fast food places and you'll be healthier.
Next is to consider WHAT you are showing and how salelable is it.
If you make multiples of any type (photos , screenprint ,letterpress , litho , zines , comix ect) it's pretty easy to both carry and sell . The key is having stuff that you can sell under 30$.
If you are showing paintings or more expensive work , it might be worthwhile to make a some prints , a zine or small artist book of your work ect.
Badges and t-shirts work well too.

If you are organized and contact places in advance , artist centers , universities , community centers ect might be will to to have you do a lecture , talk or workshop that you can collect a fee for (depending on you level of experience , if you are green don't fret , craft fairs or d.i.y spaces might still be happy to have you). And some galleries will pay your travel expenses. if you are like us , you'll mostly be showing in more D.I.Y spaces that don't have any money at all but you should try to show at at least a couple "official" type places . This will look on on your C.V. for the future , help you break even and be a great way to meet artists outside of your circle of friends.

Art or craft fairs are also a good thing to plan your tour around , if there are any that cater to the type of work you do, it might be a good starting point. We've set up a tour around music festivals that we'd sell our posters at , and art festival we were invited to show at and around a Flatstock poster convention .

The 3rd thing is to make people aware or your art shows. We've made tour posters that we sent out to all the organizers , contacted the media in each city and bought banner ads . We also got a website to "sponsor" a tour we did with free banner ads.

By doing these things , and by often pairing up with local artists or bands , we managed to break even on our costs. It actually was easier than breaking even on a band tour!

Jason asks :
1. What started u guys in the art/printmaking/music scenery?

I (Chloe) go started with printmaking by doing zines in my teens , Yannick in art school. We'd both been involved in the punk / experimental music scenes in our cities from our teen years on. Both of us started as spectators , then promoters , then began performing towards the end of high school.
Surprisingly , it took us each many years of printmaking and music making before we got together and started making posters in order to tie our 2 interests together.

2. Do u guys do collaborations with other Artists/Musician-artist and if so are you selective of who you choose?

Of course we're selective! Our time is pretty limited cause we have so much stuff on the go and generally we only collaborate in real life settings (where we can jam together). We like to work with friends (old and new) who's work we respect and admire.

3. I am an Art/musician of sorts and I do printmaking when I can ,its a long and rewarding process how long do the prints you guys wonderfully make take???

Including drawing and layout , usually 4 days.

4.What are your influences in art and music? How have they shaped what you do now in your artwork and music????
--Art influences : Philip Guston, Jim Lambie , Saul Steinberg , Vittorio Fiorruci , Keiichi Tanaami, Wiktor Gorka , Jan Mlodozeniec , Eduaordo Munoz Bachs , Mark Beyer , Jelle Crama , Gunsho , Zeloot , Simon Bosse , Bongoût.

Musical influences : Captain Beefheart , Voivoid , Black Flag , Arab On Radar , Fat Day , US Maple , Pussy Galore , Harry Pussy , Sightings , Lake Of Dracula , Mars , Emerson Lake And Palmer , Gong , Batucada music, Throbbing Gristle, Royal Trux , Slayer.

The shaping is by osmosis , inspiration and having our brains wrenched open and filled with greatness.

5.There any music/experimental music and art that you would NOT do? Or are you guys open to anything within taste and reason?

Well , with both our band and our art , we like to shift focus every once in awhile and bring in new elements and new ideas. Or main goals are to be honest to ourselves , do work that we find personally interesting and challenging and keep evolving. So I guess what we would not do is stuff we aren't interested in.

MP asks :
What kind of ink are you using? Speedball?
We actually print with acrylic and latex paint.It's a trick we learned from Henriette Valium.

Where to get the best and cheapest supplies in Montreal or internet?

In Montreal we buy our chemicals , squeegees , blades , screens and even our press at Cosmex and buy our paper in bulk at Technolith.

How do you come up with your layers and transparency color to get these effects?

We've always been interested in pushing the medium of screenprinting , thus are very into overlays , split fountains and other such trickerys. We use a light table to plan out our layers and are very generous with the transparent base while printing. we usually work everything out on photoshop in advance .
I'd suggest studying upon color theory and experimenting.

Isn't screenprinting toxic (chemical cleaning product)? Dangerous to do that at home on a long time basis?

Quite possibly. we've done it at home and know many others who have. None of us are dead but who knows what will happen down the line.
Obviously , the more ventilation you have the better and a hood vent is great but can be expensive. We keep 2 fans in our washout area , one to push the air , the other to suck it.
We also open the windows when working with reclaimer or dehazer. Obviously this is not the perfect scenario.

Wear that respirator and make sure it's well fitted and . Store it in airtight container and change the filters often.

What kind of paper are you using?

We don't have a particular brand we stick with. We generally go for white stock between 8 and 12 points. white because it's easier to control overprint colours that way and thin stock because are editions gets pasted in the streets. we buy all our paper at technolith so we are somewhat dependent on what's available. When we find stock we like we buy crates of it.

Neither of us are into fussy expensive art paper and feel that unless you are some hotshot "fine art" type who sells work for major $$$, the cotton rag paper is a waste of money.

Ethan asks :
What advice can you give me. I always post art, shirts, whatever on myspace/my wordpress/livejournal/etsy and it seems like I'm not getting it. I don't think enough people are seeing my stuff. What do I need to do? Even locally, what can I do? Knoxville just seems to be a dead end.

Well I don't think ANY city is a dead end. I bet if you were to set up an art show in town with your own work + work from a few artists you like and are in contact with , folks would come out of the woodwork.

People respond well to physical objects , if you make zine compilations of your drawings (and perhaps drawings from other artists you like) , it can be a good way to folks remember you.

In any case , I think "real life" interactions are better than online ones.

Ryan Asks:

What were some expenses you ran into when starting the co-op?

Well our main expenses were rent and construction materials. When we first got the space , it wasn't set up at ALL so we needed a few months to get shit together. By throwing a few parties we made the money need to transform the place into rentable shape.

What would you say the best method of getting your name out there and making it stick?

Hmm this one is tricky. For us , blogging , touring the US and Europe with our work , sending our work to magazines , hosting workshops , submitting to group shows , entering competitions and networking online helped out a lot. We still have a ways to go.
As for making your name stick , I think the most important thing is to always be doing new work and try to showcase it as often as possible.

Shawn asks :
I'm going to start being an artist and printing soon and I know this question is dumb, but how do you actually print?

Get this book , it has everything you need.

2. And what kind of paper?
We use 12 or 10 point offset stock we buy from a local factory. Honestly though, you can print on any kind of paper.

3. And what kind of "things" do you use, do you scan and stuff?
We render our work in pen and ink , sometimes a bit o' collage. Everything is worked out in black and white , scanned and mounted in Photoshop. We then print out enlargements at a local copy shop and use these enlargements as films. We bring them to our studio and begin the screenprinting process.

Our important tools : technical pens , pencils , tracing paper , drawing paper , speedball pens and nibs , brushes , light table , india ink, fw acrylic inks , x-acto knives , type sample books , old magazines and books , glue sticks , whiteout, xerox machines , scanner , powerbook.

4. How do you scan a bigger piece of work?

We generally work small and blow our work up so for us , this is not an issue.

5. What's overprinting like?

Overprinting is simply when you print over top of an area that's already been printed. We do this often because:
a) If you work with transparent inks , you can create extra colors by overlaying inks on top of each other.
And b) because sometime we like to cover our drawings and line work with big blobs of color to add some mystery and abstraction.

There are many ways to use overprinting to create more personal work , if's all about experimenting and developing a style.One word of advice though : when overprinting it's VERY important that your ink is properly dried to avoid paper distortion. ideally have a dehumidifying in the room what the prints are drying and a couple of good fans.

6. Can you scan paintings?

Yes you can. And you can make screenprints of them by seperating the colors into CMYK channels in photoshop and printing out each layer.
Import your image into photoshop , convert it into CMYK , go into channels and select each chanel seperately and copy it into a new window. In each window you now have a greyscale file .
Now you can adjust the contrast of each layer.
now convert your image to bitmap and select halftone.
You will have to select lines per inch and angle.
The finest you can go in lines per inch is to take your mesh count number and divide it by 5.
For the angle the standards for screenprinting are as follows :
K:45
y:90
C:105
M:75

Once you have some experinece with seperations , you can mess with theangles for fun.

You can also do index seperations , which is a bit more complicated but nicer.

7. How do you print on shirts?

Pretty much the same way you print on paper although registration gets tricky for more than one color. For great advice on building a cheap and easy shirt press check out this book

8. How can I get bands to want make posters for them?

Well we did it by making posters for our own band and our friends' bands . Gradually by word of mouth local promoters starting asking us and then out of town bands started asking us. The best way to get bands to wanna work with you is to do quality work in a distinct style and then get your work seen by people.

Hi Dustin! In Montreal there are several DIY artist studio spaces , including ours , The 100 Sided Die. You also have more professional places like
Atelier Graff, that are artist run printmaking studios that get gov. funding.

Our installation work (like everything we do) is all printed with water based acrylics or latex. It's on 8pt white offset stock and is wheatpasted to the wall. Clean up after the show is done with wet sponges and wallpaper scrappers. You will wanna repaint after.

We are a couple who wants to work together, we took this decision 2-3 weeks ago. we want to make books, prints etc with a "DIY ethic"... It cames not from anywhere. We take this decision because we are pretty angry and disappointed by stuff like: depend of a boss, a publishing house, a gallery/Art stuff, people who are asleep, those who have projects they never do, those we have to push or all this kind of stuff...

And well, as we see that from here you are a pretty good model for that, Bongout and Le Dernier Cri too. Sort of fairy tale...! So thanks!

This couple's work is like a beginning from zero. And it is a nice thing. We have to build, develop a sort of common personality in our drawings.

How do you begin all that stuff?
Do you think the internet may be a solution to promote our work and maybe get jobs? Because we are kind of shy awkward social retards, we don't know people (you know those people who can make you work etc...) , no bands around, just some friends we can count on one hand.. We live in a small city in Europe, so no emulation here.
You think it is just a combo of hard work, production,promotion on the web and originality, if it is possible today...?
We want not to be billionaires, just make a living of what we love to do.
We are motivated but a bit afraid like a first day in school... Maybe we know some answers but we need communication, advices about that.

So here it is.

Hey guys ,it's possible but it's difficult. At least in Europe you have the advantage of cheap and reliable travel by train . AND great quality screen ink that's affordable (Unico is excellent) So make stuff , get it online , stop being shy , start meeting folks and travel around to do art shows. Put your stuff in stores in different cities and reach out to other artists to collaborate or exhibit together.

Most artists are shy awkward social retards (Yannick and I being prime examples) and it can be very hard but it's of upmost importance to network , at least a bit.
Plan trips to larger cities to sell your work at the consignment shops and attend some openings (vernissages) and try to meet people. Bring some small prints or books you can give away to artists you like. Contact people and send them stuff in the mail. If you wanna work with bands , get on the phone/internet and contact some promoters/booking agents or some local bands you can do stuff for to start out. Go to shows (if your town is too small for interesting shows , visit nearby cities) and talk to the promoters and bands. Show them what you do and if people like it , they will contact you. It's important that people know you in order to want to help you/work with you.

I am a first year art school student in Auckland, New Zealand! I have just started screenprinting halfway through this year. I am now obsessed! I was just wondering if I could please ask you some questions to get some perspective.

How long have you been printing for????

We've each been printing for more than 13 years , but only 6 years of that has been spent printing full time.

How old were you when you started?

I (Chloe) Started at 16 , Yannick started at 18 , We're both 30 now.

How long did it take for you to get the hang of the printing process/gain confidence in your ability????

Well we only started doing more complicated and ambitious work once we started Seripop in 2002. Right away we started talking shop with other printmakers and visiting their studios . This was probably the best instruction either of us have had , better than college or university. I'd say once we started picking the brains of fellow printmakers for tricks and watching them work our own printing improved 10 fold in about 8 months time.

How did you develop your unique style???? I guess it is just a whole lot of experimentation right??

The style we have now was a natural evolution over time. If you look at our early work on gigposters.com, it looks little like what we do today. For us the important thing was to forget about what a poster is *supposed* to look like and start experimenting with form and layout.
This has made our work more personal and more satisfying .

How is a day in the life of Seripop spent?

Get up around 9 , check emails , eat , gym , eat , blog , draw draw draw draw , talk to clients , eat , make photocopies , jam , go home , eat, draw draw draw , scan stuff, bed around 2.
' some days the draw draw draw is print print print and sometimes we go see bands and let them sleep on our floor. On those days we make brunch.

I really want to be able to screen print/make music all day/make gig posters,
Do you think it would be possible to make a living in New Zealand off screenprinting?
What I mean is do you get much overseas work? New Zealand is really small, so I would
most probably have to try and get work overseas. I guess the best thing I could do would be to utilize the internet right????

Most of our better paying work comes from the US and the UK . We built up a portfolio locally , doing stuff for friends on the cheap or pro bono and pimped ourselves online. Now we have an illustration agent in London who gets us work , this has been very helpful and allows us to earn a bit of coin to do our absurd art projects.

How do you print with acrylic paint?? Do you mix something with it? I have just been using mainly "Aquasheen" inks and fabric inks on paper and I can't seem to get the colours I want. It would be great if I could print with acrylics.

Yeah we do and we tend to mix most of our colours from scratch using CMYK paints .

How do you get that transparent layer overprint effect?

Lots of clear base or acrylic medium. Be sure to let each layer dry very well before printing the next the avoid distortion or buckling.

Hey guys. I, have a question. I am in a band called machinery from Grande Prairie Alberta and me and my band mate are making a 500 copy demo thingy and we are doing the artwork. Now i don't really have a question about how do the artwork but what I'm not sure about is how to size the pictures. Like, I'm not doing the layout and such so I'm just drawing what we like on the cover and back and whatever else were doing and sending the pics to Toronto for them to make up the cases i believe. So if guys could tell me the best way to go about doing this i would be very happy. Or what kind of programs are good for doing this kind of stuff. I'm a totally new at this. If you could tell me the best way to go about making album artwork it would be much appreciated.

The best way to size images is to import it into Photoshop > Image > Image Size.

I know that you do not only work with print medium, but I have read that printmaking is still your favorite. What makes print your medium of choice?

We like to work in editions because it allows our work to be disposable (for sreet postering or installation work) and to be in several places at once. It also allows us to sell our work for affordable prices and have copies to trade and give away.

Music is obviously a primary influence in your work. What type of bands do you like?

Our main musical interests are prog , noise rock , psych and noise. We are also into art rock , hardcore , punk , thrash and death metal and garage.Many of the bands we like most bend and toy with genre definitions . In general we like stuff that is heavy and/or weird.

What are your other influences?

We are both heavily influenced by underground comix , Cuban and Polish posters and contemporary art. I give a list of a few of our important influences a few posts up.

What motivates both of you as artists?

Guilt and paranoia. We both feel an overwhelming need to "leave a mark".

And finally, what social and/or political context do you show in your artwork? What issues are important to you as artists.

Well , we don't seek to be didactically political in our work. That said , our primary interest in poster making was to do "art" that would be displayed on city streets to be seen by any passerby. Our prints can be had cheaply or even free (for the savvy or those into bartering) and we feel accessibility is important.
I suppose our ideas about the distribution or art is pretty socialist -- make editioned work so that regular people can have it in their homes because everyone should be able to look at and interact with art daily. As people with pretty low incomes ourselves , prints and artists books are 2 things we can afford to buy from others and our apartment is pretty much a shrine/gallery of printmaking.

We also like to support non-profits and charities by doing graphics for them

I want to know about the beginning.

How did you start with no money?
Initially , we saved up a bit of money from our day jobs and bought some screens and a good power washer. We Did lots of contracts ,printing for other people , that allowed us to accumulate some gear and get a small studio.

Where did you get the courage?

We just didn't want to spend our lives working at jobs we hated , the prospect terrified us and we saw some of our very talented friends getting old , bitter and quiting creative pursuits cause they were broke , frustrated or too tired after 9-5 in the salt mines.
We wanted a way to see ourselves still involved in D.I.Y for life , without losing touch.
So it was really a matter of being scared of growing old , bitter , lame and going "normal".

How did you convince other people to join in on your master plan and participate?

Well we started REALLY small. The 2 of us had been playing in local bands since our mid-teens and when we were 21 we met (99) and started playing together and touring regionally in eastern Canada. On those tours we became friends with other , smallish bands that we'd in turn set up shows for and house in Montreal. Making posters was simply a way to get people out to the shows.
At a certain point the bands we were friends with started asking us to do art for them and it spread pretty quickly. We had promoters in Montreal , Ottawa and Toronto (all of whom we knew from our own band playing around) contacting us to do posters. One of the early posters was for The Hot Snakes and right away we got asked to do a record cover for Rocket From The Crypt , despite our total lack of experience.
We learned a lot doing it and it kinda made us look more legit so jobs starting slowly floating in. Over time , word of mouth spread and a few of the tiny local bands we did stuff for *cough*Arcade Fire*cough* became indie darlings and then international superstars, putting our work on the map.

What is it like for the first couple of years?
EXTREMELY hard. In order to create a demand for our work , we churned out HUDREDS of posters in those first few years and even toured with our work. We didn't really know how to promote ourselves other than doing as many prints as possible to increase the amount of folks seeing it.
We often would print until 9 or 10 in the morning to get orders done , and lived off of the worst food ever. We are and had been health food nuts (we're both vegan and try to eat organic) so having to eat ramen for lunch was especially humiliating.

A few times , we'd collect bottles and cans at the rehearsal complex our band jammed at just to buy food and many months rent was paid by credit card.
At the same time , it was VERY satisfying and fun.
We'd go to fests to sell our prints and chat bands up , go to shows all most every night , and always have bands sleep on our floor (and stay up all night talking about art and music and listening to records).
We felt we were doing something worthwhile and that we were creating our own lives , despite the financial hardships and long hours.

I'm glad we laid that foundation and made the friends and connections we did while we where still in our early 20's and full of pep.

How did you manage to pay rent and feed yourselves while doing your art and music?

Hustling (both to sell our prints and to get jobs) , working insanely long hours (to do as many jobs as possible) , calling in favors , living on borrowed money , doing contract printing for other artists and designers and constantly having new prints to flog.

We were tireless self promoters for the simple fact , that it was the only way we could pay the bills.
If we could go back , I'd def. make sure we had more savings before quitting our jobs. I don't really advise anyone to do what we did , we were WAY too close to the brink of disaster , way too many times.

In 2004 , faced with arthritic knees and tendonitis , we had a few bands we were pals with play a benefit for us that allowed us to put a payment down on a used semi-automatic press. Once we had the press running , printing became much faster (and less physically taxing) so we were able to spend more time working on the actual designs , this helped us out BIG time to start to earn something resembling a *decent* living.

Nowadays , most of our time is spent on drawing and laying out work. The printing is relatively easy and fun.We still have months where we worry about covering rent and bills but they seem to get less and less frequent each year.

Did you ever find yourself bored or incapable of completing certain things, or were you able to just focus all day in whatever you needed to do?

Yeah , for sure.we got burnt out a few times.One poster we were doing for US Maple and Sicbay just never got done. We started printing it twice and both times had terrible registration troubles from the paper distorting. We were burnt , frustrated , hungry and BROKE so when our buddy Alden called us to come over for dinner , we just ditched the job half-done . I still feel bad about it , especially cause we're such Sicbay / Dazzling Killmen fans and it was Nick Sakes who hired us.
We're much better at pacing ourselves now so we don't get overbooked , I don't think a flakeout has happened in at least 2 years.

Baltimore Invades Pop Montreallllll!!!

Baltimore is a city that has a very warm place is Seripop lore. Back in 2002 , when we had only made like 5 (not very good) posters , Nolen Strals from Post Typography (also from the band Double Dagger)asked us to take part in a group show he was setting up. Well , we'd never BEEN in an art show at that point so we grabbed Mike Long got in the van and drove down. Seeing all those posters made something click in our brain. This was design, design can be a job. Many people do what we do for fun , full time , therefore we can have fun full time! WE got home and quit our jobs and it's been nothing but bad vibes ever since. THANKS NOLEN FOR BELIEVING IN US! This show was the first time we saw Mat Brinkman's prints in real life as well as Keith Herzik's and both were very illuminating. And meeting Keith , well let's just say he's one of the best dudes on earth in addition to his brain melting art.

By a perfect psychic meeting of the stars , the Oops tour was hitting Baltimore the same day we were there. So , after have our minds blown and way of life challenged by ODing on brilliant poster art , we got to see Arab On Radar (I spent their entire set rolling on the floor , or Spagghettimoshing), Wolf Eyes (Who we both had never heard and hated that night , then fell in love with on record a few months later. By the the time we saw them in Cleveland a year latter , they were one of our favorite bands), Lightning Bolt , Orthrelm And The Locust, plus we got to tangle with the Baltimore rowdy crew.

Another mind-melting part of that trip was breakfast. Popscicles and generic froot loops with vanilla soymilk , Baltimore sure knows how to party.

so of course after that and a few amazing returns (spending time at
Tarantula Hill gave us each other major epiphanies - Twig and Carly are super inspiring and awesome folk) , we always look at this city with fondness and sometimes dream about living there.

That said , when we found out about the Baltimore Round Robin we JUMPED at the chance to do a poster for it. The bands range from noise to punk, to folk , to electro , to indie pop to neo-wave (and those are just the bands we actually KNOW) so it's got something to cater to *most* tastes.

The "round robin" concept: at each gig, all of the night's bands will set up their gear simultaneously "along the perimeter of the room, with the audience in the center." Then the round robin part begins, as each band rolls through one song, then passes the spotlight to the next band with nary a moment's break in between. By the end of it, in exchange for a sore neck, you'll be intimately familiar with the musical goods Baltimore has to offer.

What sort of country do we want to live in? What sort of country do we already live in? What do we like? Who are we?

At present, we are a very creative country. For decades, we've been punching above our weight on the world stage - in writing, in popular music and in many other fields. Canada was once a cultural void on the world map, now it's a force. In addition, the arts are a large segment of our economy: The Conference Board estimates Canada's cultural sector generated $46-billion, or 3.8 per cent of Canada's GDP, in 2007. And, according to the Canada Council, in 2003-2004, the sector accounted for an “estimated 600,000 jobs (roughly the same as agriculture, forestry, fishing, mining, oil & gas and utilities combined).”

But we've just been sent a signal by Prime Minister Stephen Harper that he gives not a toss for these facts. Tuesday, he told us that some group called “ordinary people” didn't care about something called “the arts.” His idea of “the arts” is a bunch of rich people gathering at galas whining about their grants. Well, I can count the number of moderately rich writers who live in Canada on the fingers of one hand: I'm one of them, and I'm no Warren Buffett. I don't whine about my grants because I don't get any grants. I whine about other grants - grants for young people, that may help them to turn into me, and thus pay to the federal and provincial governments the kinds of taxes I pay, and cover off the salaries of such as Mr. Harper. In fact, less than 10 per cent of writers actually make a living by their writing, however modest that living may be. They have other jobs. But people write, and want to write, and pack into creative writing classes, because they love this activity – not because they think they'll be millionaires.

Every single one of those people is an “ordinary person.” Mr. Harper's idea of an ordinary person is that of an envious hater without a scrap of artistic talent or creativity or curiosity, and no appreciation for anything that's attractive or beautiful. My idea of an ordinary person is quite different. Human beings are creative by nature. For millenniums we have been putting our creativity into our cultures - cultures with unique languages, architecture, religious ceremonies, dances, music, furnishings, textiles, clothing and special cuisines. “Ordinary people” pack into the cheap seats at concerts and fill theatres where operas are brought to them live. The total attendance for “the arts” in Canada in fact exceeds that for sports events. “The arts” are not a “niche interest.” They are part of being human.

Moreover, “ordinary people” are participants. They form book clubs and join classes of all kinds - painting, dancing, drawing, pottery, photography - for the sheer joy of it. They sing in choirs, church and other, and play in marching bands. Kids start garage bands and make their own videos and web art, and put their music on the Net, and draw their own graphic novels. “Ordinary people” have other outlets for their creativity, as well: Knitting and quilting have made comebacks; gardening is taken very seriously; the home woodworking shop is active. Add origami, costume design, egg decorating, flower arranging, and on and on ... Canadians, it seems, like making things, and they like appreciating things that are made.

They show their appreciation by contributing. Canadians of all ages volunteer in vast numbers for local and city museums, for their art galleries and for countless cultural festivals - I think immediately of the Chinese New Year and the Caribana festival in Toronto, but there are so many others. Literary festivals have sprung up all over the country - volunteers set them up and provide the food, and “ordinary people” will drag their lawn chairs into a field - as in Nova Scotia's Read by the Sea - in order to listen to writers both local and national read and discuss their work. Mr. Harper has signalled that as far as he is concerned, those millions of hours of volunteer activity are a waste of time. He holds them in contempt.

I suggest that considering the huge amount of energy we spend on creative activity, to be creative is “ordinary.” It is an age-long and normal human characteristic: All children are born creative. It's the lack of any appreciation of these activities that is not ordinary. Mr. Harper has demonstrated that he has no knowledge of, or respect for, the capacities and interests of “ordinary people.” He's the “niche interest.” Not us.

It's been suggested that Mr. Harper's disdain for the arts is not merely a result of ignorance or a tin ear - that it is “ideologically motivated.” Now, I wonder what could be meant by that? Mr. Harper has said quite rightly that people understand we ought to keep within a budget. But his own contribution to that budget has been to heave the Liberal-generated surplus overboard so we have nothing left for a rainy day, and now, in addition, he wants to jeopardize those 600,000 arts jobs and those billions of dollars they generate for Canadians. What's the idea here? That arts jobs should not exist because artists are naughty and might not vote for Mr. Harper? That Canadians ought not to make money from the wicked arts, but only from virtuous oil? That artists don't all live in one constituency, so who cares? Or is it that the majority of those arts jobs are located in Ontario and Quebec, and Mr. Harper is peeved at those provinces, and wants to increase his ongoing gutting of Ontario - $20-billion a year of Ontario taxpayers' money going out, a dribble grudgingly allowed back in - and spank Quebec for being so disobedient as not to appreciate his magnificence? He likes punishing, so maybe the arts-squashing is part of that: Whack the Heartland.

Or is it even worse? Every budding dictatorship begins by muzzling the artists, because they're a mouthy lot and they don't line up and salute very easily. Of course, you can always get some tame artists to design the uniforms and flags and the documentary about you, and so forth - the only kind of art you might need - but individual voices must be silenced, because there shall be only One Voice: Our Master's Voice. Maybe that's why Mr. Harper began by shutting down funding for our artists abroad. He didn't like the competition for media space.

The Conservative caucus has already learned that lesson. Rumour has it that Mr. Harper's idea of what sort of art you should hang on your wall was signalled by his removal of all pictures of previous Conservative prime ministers from their lobby room - including John A. and Dief the Chief - and their replacement by pictures of none other than Mr. Harper himself. History, it seems, is to begin with him. In communist countries, this used to be called the Cult of Personality. Mr. Harper is a guy who - rumour has it, again - tried to disband the student union in high school and then tried the same thing in college. Destiny is calling him, the way it called Qin Shi Huang, the Chinese emperor who burnt all records of the rulers before himself. It's an impulse that's been repeated many times since, the list is very long. Tear it down and level it flat, is the common motto. Then build a big statue of yourself. Now that would be Art! It's roughly 10' by 10' and is 110$ per month , tax and utilities included.
You get 24 hour access to the studio and access to the silkscreen darkroom (with exposure unit , fridge , storage) and washout unit , and shared "kitchen" area (it's pretty minimal but there is full sized fridge w/ freezer , microwave , kettle, coffee maker , sink , toaster and toaster oven) plus you have your own storage shelf above your space.

The 100 Sided Die is a co-operative studio space in a mile end mid-rise. Near Laurier metro and the 80 bus route.It's shared by musicians , fabric artists , painters , drawers and screenprinters. we're on the 12th floor and have loading dock and freight elevator access. the studio is totally DIY and has been running for 4 years , we just now renewed the lease.
Looking for someone friendly , responsible and at least somewhat clean.

Print Liberation: The Screen Printing Primer by Nick Paparone, Jamie Dillon, and Luren Jenison

How I wish this book had been around when I first started printing and struggled to get decent prints just using the pamphlet is came with my speedball kit . How I REALLY wish it had been around when Yannick and I started Seripop and struggled with Screening T shirts For Fun And Profit and various industrial screenprint manuals from the 60s. It would have saved us lots of money and heartache and had us form a more realistic outlook on living off of our printing skillz.

It's a book made specifically with the D.I.Yer in mind and spares you both on the Martha-esque mom-craft and on the "get rich in your garage screening shirts for the local little league team". Instead it's an easy to follow book that is perfect for both the person who will wanna make a poster or shirt every once in a while for shits and giggles as well as a comprehensive primer for the artist , crafter or would be entrepreneur who wants to be getting inky on a regular basis. It even has lists of places you can apply for grants and residencies (we'll be making use of that page for sure! ) as well as tips on how to sell your printed goods .

With a weekend , some space , some tools , about 200$ and this book you can have you own print studio. From now on , next time we get an email from someone asking us if we teach screenprinting , I'm telling them to buy this book.

Who should buy it:
- First timers , novice and intermediate printers
- Experienced printers needing to scale down (recent grad who no longer have access to their schools' facilities and wanna keep printing at home for example)
- Anyone who teaches/trains people to screenprint .
- Also useful to pretty much anyone who wants to have a homemade studio.

What I really like about the book:
- Clear step by step instructions with photos and captions.
- Guides you through printing on paper and fabric as well as on wood, vinyl , walls ect
-Guided projects that are simple for the beginner.
-Written in everyday English , without lots of technical jargon.
-great illustrations by Tim Gough
-Talks about getting your work out there as an artist AND starting a small business while remaining realistic (printing t shirts for fun and profit it ain't)
-Photos of many types of creative screenprinted projects to get inspired from .
_set-ups aimed at folks with low budgets , that are easy to upgrade.
-Anyone with this book and a day to gather/build the supplies needed can start printing right away .
- Intergrated look at screenprinting in both low tech and high tech ways.It's rare to see a book aimed at artists and crafters show auto and semi autopresses. (reach for them stars!)

What I don't like:

The things i disagree with in the book are few and relatively minor but here goes --

- In the section on doing screenprinting as fine art they advise using oil based inks. Oil inks are super toxic and should never be used in a D.I.Y set up, only in a studio with professionally installed hood vents. (and wear that respirator!). This is pretty serious , in my opinion. While in Germany we visited our friends who print with oil inks at the studio. Even though there were 2 hood vents and they hadn't been printing for hours , the air was so thick with fumes I felt sick after just a few minutes.
You can get GREAT results with acrylic based inks these days and if you wanna upgrade over Speedball , there's always TW.

Same goes for plastisol, vinyl and epoxy inks kids! Ventilation isn't just an open window and a fan.

- There are a few mentions that printing on think paper leads to wonky , wrinkled prints and that screenprinters should use at least 80llbs paper. NOT SO! I think Yannick and I's body of work is a testament to the viability of printing on thin stock. Whether or not the paper will distort from water retention has little to do with the thickness and more to do with the quality and finish of the paper and how you dry the prints. I recommend thin stock for anything that will be posted in the streets as it's easier to paste up, harder to tear down and lighter to carry . If you let you prints dry well between layers you will have minimal distortion.

- Registration tabs made from cardboard are fine but for big runs you can't beat plastic. Cut strips with a ruler and exacto from the lid of an old plastic carton and you have reusable registration tabs. OR do like we do and use Dyno label maker tape. Plastic doesn't distort the way masking tape and cardboard can. You can get super tight registration that will STAY tight even if you are doing 600 prints.

LOOK LOOK LOOK! WE STARTED OUR OWN RECORD LABEL !!!!

It's called Kanker Mongool and this is our first release. The Rebel- Live AIDS ep.
Edition of 350 , all silkscreened in comicbook sized covers (get it?) and hand numbered. The Rebel is usually the solo project of Country Teasers' front man , B.R Wallers. now his wife and Country Teasers' most recent bass player is joining him on metronome-like drums and things are sounding even more left field .

Art For Spastics played it this week and after we ship the orders we just got , we only have about 50 copies left. Any distros who wanna grab 'em should get in touch.

We'd both been wanting to start a lil' label for sometime but lack of finances & time always stood in our way. After our second 3rd trip to Antwerp last year (and buying every Ultra Eczema record we could get our hands on ) we started talking on the long bus ride to Berlin. The idea was to start some that , we , being record collectors , would be excited about. Limited runs , silkscreened sleeves and we 'd get to do ANYTHING we wanted too with the art , no matter how weird. And of course , all tracks would be exclusive.

About 2 weeks latter , we were in London and saw The Rebel and had our minds blown. I feel safe in sayin' that the were probably the best thing I saw in 2007 .After chatting with them a bit we wanted them to be our first record and 2 other points of our label came forth : we'd only put out bands we'd personally seen live and knew were killer performers AND we'd only put out stuff by people we knew.

So there you have it.
We'll be putting out 02(it's KILLER) as soon as we have some money.

The Boys Are Back In Town Motherfuckers!!!!!!!

So we got back from tour just a little over a week ago and this is what we did after vegging out on the couch a few days.
It's for a show in in Montreal staring

No Age , Abe Vigoda and High Places. The show is gonna be a jammer , Yannick and I love Abe Vigoda's bizarre latin-nowave-salsa punk so hard. 4 color screenprint with not one but 2 rainbow split fountains. It's nice to be home , in the studio.

Of course , we aren't total slackers and while in Germany managed to work on a few prints:

It's 4 colors , 20" x 28" and for Melt Banana. A collab with did with the insane ad brilliant
Bongout. True print warriors , these kids are. Anna and Meeloo have the most intense work ethics of anyone we have ever met. Totally "Get In The Van".

Zur Ausstellungseröffnung am 6.Juni ab 19 Uhr laden wir ein.

Für Seripop aus Montreal ist das Schaffen ein vielköpfiges Monster. Ganz
spontan wurden unerbittliche Generationen von Ideen zum Selbstläufer. Ihre
Heimatstadt und die Welt sind eine große Fundgrube inspirierender Bilder und
Gedanken, die in Projekte wie Illustration, Kunst, Malerei, Kleidung,
Performance, Multimedia, Außeninstallation und andere Bereiche, in denen
Kunst sich manifestiert, umgesetzt werden.

Das Duo, das im Jahr 2000 ernsthaft mit Siebdruck begann und schnell einen
enormen Berg Rockposter und Kunstdrucke produziert hatte, ist seit langem im
musikalischen und künstlerischen Underground involviert. Sie haben für ihre
eigene Band AIDS Wolf wie für hunderte anderer Bands Poster und Plattencover
gestaltet. Sie sind eine feste Größe in der Undergroundmusik und für ihre
unglaublich produktive Arbeitsweise, dickköpfige Hingabe und ihren Hang zu
Noise bekannt. In der Tat ist es so, dass AIDS Wolf und Seripop sowohl in
philosophischer als auch ästhetischer Hinsicht so miteinander verquickt
sind, dass man sich das eine nicht mehr ohne das andere vorstellen kann.

In ihrer Arbeit geht es um Extreme - darum, so viele Ideen zu Papier zu
bringen wie möglich, um die ganze Sache in eine Einheit zu bringen. Ihr
Ansatz ist es, Grenzen auszuloten: was bedeutet Kunst, was Grafik/Design,

Seripop is a wacky and prolific duo of graphic designers from
Montreal. Renowned since 2001 for their handmade DIY-psychedelic-punk
noise rock concert posters (Lightning Bolt, the USA is a Monster, TV
on the Radio, XBXRX, An Albatross, Wolf Eyes, Black Dice…), they have
adopted silkscreen printing as their favourite medium. It seemed
normal that we should invite them to make the Bongout showroom their
home for a few weeks.

Seripop ist ein abgedrehtes und arbeitswütiges Grafikerduo aus
Montreal. Die seit 2001 für ihre handgemachten DIY-punk-

We're leaving for tour in a little over 2 weeks and the art flow is seriously slowing DOWN.
Last night we printed THESE , probably the last poster we do till we get back. It's for the AIDS Wolf show next Thursday with Japanther , Sightings and Black Feelings at Sala. Should be fun. I've been listing to the new Sightings record pretty much DAILY since it came out his fall and know every song by heart. I'm so excited to play with them again.

With all the art shows , touring and work we're doing these days neither of us have been going to a quarter as many shows as we'd like (or to do much else for that matter). Well we went to Divan Orange to see Wolf Eyes and local freakout kings , Ghost Limbs . The Show was a total jammer and I got a million ideas for drawing while banging my head. It's interesting how heavy rhythms can set off the internal slide show . I feel like I'm need a brain video camera to capture them all.

So , our band is doing a 7" on the German label Slowboy . Screen nerds might recognize the Slowboy name as also being some of the best screenprinters in the EU. They printed the 7" cover we did for Trend and it looks 200x better than anything we've printed ourselves.

Well print geeks and noise rock jerks might both be excited by this 7" , called Chipped Teeth , that's also a (slim) book , designed by us , printed by Slowboy.

Winter Blues Require INSPIRATION!

Spring hasn't quite sprung yet in Montreal , in fact it's an unending misery parade of blustery slush , ice and S.A.D. Yannick and I are trying to keep our upbeat outlook (yeah right!) by brewing a cuppa tea , throwing on an extra sweater and getting inspired by other people's work + ideas.

Screening Demons is a eclectic blog all about screenprinting (with an emphasis on the D.I.Y) by a lady named Shannon who lives in Brooklyn. She posts videos , photos , interviews , musings and news that should be of interest to anyone wanting to expand their techniques , build a home studio or start a clothing line.

Her tastes are diverse and the blog features screenprinters of different styles , background and levels of experience.

Tara Books is a publishing company from India that's putting out STUNNING art books and children's books. The most exciting though is they have an entire LINE of handcrafted books. Handmade paper , letterpress or silkscreen, hardbound- by HAND. The level of quality and craftsmanship in their books is jaw dropping and the illustrations will excite even the most jaded. Thier books are also VERY affordable for what they are.

We bought a copy of "The Night Life Of Trees" at Drawn & Quarterly this past Sunday and just can't stop looking at it , touching it and feeling like slackers in comparison .

Come on kids , there's just no excuse for sloppy printing and binding anymore. Pull those bootstraps high up!

Painter NYC is another blog worth checking out. Basically , they just post images of paintings and their batting average for engaging and fresh work is HIGH. I'm normally bored by painting as a medium so it's good to find a blog about it that excites and shows a full range of possibility with color , form and composition. Just by wary of the comments , it's troll central.

And here's a blog for both the corporate chic and the subversive Brand New : Opinions on corporate and brand identity work . It's a cold eye on logos and branding and discusses how they work - or fail.

Designer Craig Oldham addresses a pet peeve of mine in rant on graphic presentation. Please keep your HANDS outta the images.

Co-Prosperity Sphere’s new poster show "Radar Eyes" is a jam-packed visual
orgy. Curated by Seripop—an award-winning Montreal print collective—and
Chicago’s Reuben Kincaid, it features silk-screened art posters and music
show notices by some of the world’s most retina-scorching designers.
Standouts include Carrie Vinarsky’s pastoral image of a cat spirit hovering
above a cauldron, Brent Wadden’s layered Day-Glo hallucinations, Liz
Hickey’s obsessively filigreed etchings and Gunsho’s delicate, charmingly
rendered mutant grotesques. The Paper Rad collective’s bad-acid aesthetic is
the main formal thread, but references to Modernist geometric and
Expressionist abstraction are also in evidence.

Optical thrill-seekers should make every effort to get to Bridgeport before
this monumental show comes down.

Co-Prosperity Sphere is open Saturday, March 15, noon-6pm and by
appointment: Call Reuben Kincaid at 773-837-0145. Or catch the closing
reception March 22, 7pm–midnight, with a special performance

Now I KNOW I should be happy that the show got some press but Paper Rad? Please , They aren't even IN the show. While *many* well established and respected artists are. It also feels like a kick in the teeth that none of our installation stuff even got a mention. I'm kinda annoyed.

Anyway , Chicago was pretty rad. We mostly just spent all our time in the gallery building our installation but Saturday had a chance to hit the town and go to Quimby's (=heaven) , eat AMAZING vegan food , see rad bands and hang out with friends. It's a city we'd both like to live in but right now , I feel I'd be happy ANYWHERE that's not Montreal.

Speaking of Chicago , I recently bought both the latest comic and collection from Ivan Brunetti , a longtime fave.
His misanthropy is especially interesting/attractive right now. People are miserable shits! Plus I love the way he draws. Reading his stuff really makes me wanna try my hand at comix.

It's a tour poster for our band. Lately we've been pretty quiet on the poster front as we've mostly been doing job-jobs , "Art" and band crap. It feel kinda good to be making a few , like i'm going home or something.

Our pal , Harrison , from Brooklyn , does a cool project called Fingered DVD zine . A couple times a year , he travels to a city and films elements of it's underground scene , documentary style. His latest one is on Montreal and Seripop is featured heavily.
Anyway , there's a launch party Sunday March 16th, 3pm - 6-pm at Drawn & Quarterly. It's FREE and Dreamcatcher and Monday Morning Erection will play.

Unraveling To A Peak

I'm typing this entry laying on my back in a room without windows. Yannick and I have spent the past 6 days doing pretty much nothing but cutting , folding , glueing , hanging and sorting and now that EVERYTHING is more or less done all I wanna do is nap.

Our excursions from the building have beenn minimal to say the least , any plans we made with friends got dashed and now that there's an inch of free time I'm too burnt and sore to really take advantage.

The show looks great though and I'm excited as all get-out for tonight. People sent some mind blowing work and I'm humbled and proud to be in contact with such a talented bunch of art jerks.
